Spamming the forum - It gets worse!

Postby larry104 » Tue Nov 26, 2013 8:07 pm

It's not fun to read threads in the forum if half of the posts are *REPORT ME I'M A SPAMMER* sales and crap - Can whoever is the admin warn these folks or remove them?
Thanks!

I finally decided to bring the situation with our recent lack of forum maintenance to Patrick's attention. His response was immediate. The forum is important to him. He personally started the cleanup, and will be assigning an employee to keep the spam in check. Happy, happy! :)

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I am scouring the forum and permanently deleting the offending users and deleting all of their posts. If you see any users I should delete/ban, let me know, but hopefully you will not. I will be as thorough as possible.

The sweeping is fun. There seems to be a few posts pertaining to the sale of CNC and 3d printing related products. How do you feel about those posts?

Personally, I'm OK with advertising posts, as long as they're not a barrage. I recall one seller of 3D printing filament who did multiple posts, but otherwise, they're mostly pretty restrained.

The real spammers are insidious, though. They shift accounts and ip addresses, worm through the registration process, quote from other posts in the threads... The cleaning process needs to be done regularly, because those suckers are ingenious and persistent. Just banning an address won't stop them.

I'm going to look into using the ip address to ban them. As they pop up, I will determine their ip address then add the ip address to the banning list. Let's see what happens.

Hey guys, sorry I've been out for a few weeks. Of course it seemed to happen right at spammer-high-tide... ugh.

ROFL, never turn your back on a gold seller. He'll paste an ad on your shirt... :)

Yeah, no kidding. I was actually clearing off ads during my "absent time", though I could never find enough time to make it through all of them. So it probably seemed like I wasn't here, but I was lurking.
