I built the book machine after buying the book. I don't think I'd have wanted to do it without the book, though I did use the online drawings as additional reference.

I'm finding that having the book is a great resource of info for how to put one of these things together, having never done it before.

I built mine solely on photos found through google searches and youtube of "blackfoot/toe, greenbull, bluechick" with some modifications of my own added in.

My first machine was built generally following Patrick's first DIY machine. You can see this simple variation using my own ideas here:

https://buildyourcnc.com/AldenGCNCMachine.aspx

I learned a lot from that experience and used my first CNC machine using a Dremel tool as the router, to cut out the new, improved pieces of my 2nd machine that I still use today, using either a Porter Cable 890 router or mount the Dremel if I want, (although I've never gone back to the Dremel thus far).
