Nema 24 X-axis broken drive shaft twice

Nema 24 X-axis broken drive shaft twice

Postby Gunter » Sun Apr 12, 2015 11:25 pm

Trying to tease out what might be causing the failure of the drive shaft on the motor of the x-axis of my blacktoe.
I am cutting extruded polystyrene foam (the pink stuff) so material resistance or back pressure should be low.
Router running at 12k rpm with 1/4" upcut ballnose.

G-code
Feed rate is 300 ipm and plunge rate is 30ipm.

Planet cnc settings
Acceleration 100
Init speed 500
Max speed 2000

I love this machine, and when it works it does what it should albeit i am still learning.
But solving one issue is always followed by another.

Suggestions welcomed.

Best guess is acceleration/deceleration. That would put too much torque on the shaft. (This is the same reason you need to get bigger axles on a truck when you put on big tires. If you get a big tire spinning, and it grabs quick on a rock and stops... pop goes your axle shaft!)

You have your acceleration set to 100, in English units? Mine is set to 5-7, on my BlackFoot!
If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

Another idea would be binding between the left and right sides. Maybe loosen one side's coupler, and see if the gantry moves. That could be putting a large torque load across the motor shaft.
