Do I need to replace a motor?

The stepping motor that moves the Y axis on my machine makes a really loud howling noise when it's moving very slowly, such as tracing a flat arc. It is exactly the same motor - NEMA 24 - that moves the X axis quietly. Powered off, the Y axis moves freely, with only the resistance from the magnets. The sound it makes is somewhat like that a jammed stepping motor makes.

The electronics are all from the Blackfoot I made 3 years ago, that I've moved over to my own machine without any change (except replacing the Y axis chain drive with an ACME screw). I'm using a smooth stepper with Mach3 and a vanilla HP Win 7 desktop.

If the little video uploads, you can hear the howl over the spindle.

Maybe try swapping the x and y motors, to see if the noise follows the motor or upstream drive electronics.
If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?

I swapped connection to controllers, the Y axis motor still made grinding/howling noise, and the other motor remained quiet. So I guess the Y axis motor was damaged somehow.

Could it be something mechanical making the noises, such as a frozen bearing or metal dragging?
